First a home to Native Americans, the Sunriver area was soon inhabited by settlers and trappers, notably including John Fremont. In early December 1942, 5,550 acres were claimed by the United States War Department to use as a training camp – Camp Abbot. In just two years, 1943-4, the acreage that would become Sunriver Resort trained over 90,000 combat engineers. In June of 1944 Camp Abbot was closed and many of the buildings were razed. The Officers’ Club was saved and has been preserved and transformed into what is now the Great Hall. Developers John Gray and Donald V. McCallum designed the Resort and the first condo was sold in 1968, the same year that Sunriver Realty was established.
