Fourth of July is next weekend, and while we want to celebrate to the fullest here in Central Oregon, we are experiencing record breaking dry and hot conditions, so whether you live here full time, or are just visiting, there are some crucial safety tips you should know before lighting off any and all fireworks you have without some prep first.
Clear Area- If you choose to light fireworks this year, be sure it is in a clear, open area away from any dead brush or grass, and be aware of any trees above, as a small spark or ash can float up and ignite trees above we often forget about. A large, open parking lot away from cars is preferable.
Water- Always have a hose close and ready when lighting off fireworks, and be sure to throw your fireworks in a bucket full of water, completely submerged overnight before throwing away in a garbage bin.
Always Outside- Always light fireworks outside, never indoors. It may seem like common sense, but you would be surprised.
Never Light in Hand- Keep fireworks on the ground and light, and be ready to get out of the way fast, never light in your hand, as they can explode. If a firework doesn’t seem to be lighting after a few tries, it’s probably malfunctioning, and should be thrown in the water bucket.
Never Point at Person- Keep fireworks on the ground, and never aim at a person.
Let Adults Handle- Never let children light them.
Illegal Fireworks- There’s a reason reason has banned certain fireworks, as they are a serious fire hazard and very dangerous, so go with only the legal ones here in Oregon.
