Winter is here! Well, not really, but it feels like the cold weather hit overnight here in Central Oregon, which means fires in the fireplace at night, freezing temps on our gardens and outdoor plants, and the leaves are falling! Even though it may not snow tomorrow, who knows here in the C.O, so why not get things ready in your home and outside in the yard, just in case.
For your Yard-
Gardens- Pick the last of your tomatoes and squash, and get those plants in the compost pile. You can even do a soft till on the soil too aerate a little.
Lawn Furniture- If you have outdoor yard furniture, it is probably getting to be that time to put it somewhere under cover, or cover with a tarp until next year.
Lawn- Stop mowing and watering the yard, and rake up any leaves as they are falling, as they can create patches in the grass if left until next year.
For your Home-
Chimney- Call a chimney sweeper and have them come out to clean the chimney. Chimney fires are very dangerous, and can cause serious damage, or destroy a home.
Windows- Make sure they windows are all sealed well from the inside and outside. You would be surprised how much cold air come in through even the smallest cracks. You can do this yourself and fix with a caulk or window glace, or call a window specialist and have them come out, check around the house, and fix any issues.
Heaters/ Heating Unit- Whether you have wall heaters, or a central air unit, it’s a smart idea to have them checked, cleaned, and basic maintenance done on them before the snow hits, as it’s harder to get someone out to fix it last minute; you may be waiting days, or even weeks.
Roof- Because we can have such heavy and long snow fall here, get your roof checked before it starts! It’s best to find an issue now, rather than when there’s 3 feet of snow on it. This is a big one because most of us don’t even think about it until we hear about serious roof damage done to a home near us after a big snow storm.
Car- Don’t forget about the car! Make sure once winter hits, keep at least a half tank of gas at all times, get an oil change, and basic tune up. Make sure all of the headlights and brake lights are working, and your wipers are new and in good condition.
