Last week, we talked about what you can do to start getting your yard and garden spring ready, if you missed it, you can click here to read it. This week we are going to help point you in the right direction of plants and vegetables that grow in our short, Central Oregon growing season.

Salad Greens- Lettuce, spinach, Swiss chard, boy choy, kale, and beets grow fast and prefer cooler grow weather. They can grow to mature in about 50 days, so you can make fresh salads all summer.

Peas- Growing well in cooler temps, and putting on vegetables fast, peas are easy to grow (just allow to grow up something) and fun to just pull right off the plant to snack.

Cucumbers- Especially the smaller types, can grow in about 60 days, again, depending on variety.

Broccoli- Another vegetable that is a cool weather crop, and can be ready to pick anywhere from 45-60 days, depending on the variety.

Radishes- Radishes are some of the quickest growing crops, and can grow earlier in the year, at cooler temps.

Summer Squash- These can be harvested in less than 2 months depending on the variety.

Tomatoes- There are varieties of tomatoes that are great for short grow season, look for: Early Girl, Orange Roma, Black Cherry, sun gold, and many more.

When you are looking for seeds or plant starts from your local garden store, you can either check the tags and they will give the number of days or weeks until harvest, or ask for help from an employee, they can point you in the right direction.

Happy Planting!
